About the role

Your role

Level of thesis project: Master´s thesis

Period of time: Spring 2027

Number of people needed: 1

Recruiting Team: Erik Persson, Kajsa Hjort

Target

To review and implement plasticity models and develop algorithms for simulation of the assembly of threaded fasteners.

Background

Installing the correct clamp force when assembling bolted joints is crucial to ensure high-quality production and safe products for the end user. Accurate prediction of the installed clamp force after the bolts start to plastically deform is determined by the complex stress field and the growth of the plastic region. Accurately modelling this behaviour can improve clamp force predictions, joint design, and assembly simulations.

Mission

Review and analyze the current plasticity models in a bolt assembly context. Implement them in an assembly simulation environment. Benchmark the simulations with experiments.

Your skills and experience

To contribute to this project, you should be a highly motivated and creative person who loves both theoretical and practical work.

The person shall have interests in the following areas

  • Solid Mechanics, Elastoplasticity and Fracture Mechanics
  • Simulation, for example Matlab/Simulink
  • Laboratory testing and hands-on validation
  • Basic Knowledge of Python is an advantage
  • Experience or interest in CAD/CAE, finite element analysis is an advantage
