The Senior Director, Access & Field Reimbursement is accountable for the reimbursement expertise required for engagement with the treatment centers and ensuring the field organization delivers this. Externally, this individual represents uniQure with treatment centers, hospital and health-system finance leadership and relevant healthcare provider stakeholders, and ensures the response to external customer questions, educational needs and issues is executed with the highest sense of urgency. This individual is the company's internal expert on coverage, coding and payment and monitors the access environment for important policy changes that may affect these areas in future. They will anticipate reimbursement barriers before they reach the patient, equip the field team to resolve them at the treatment center level, and lead cross-functional solutions that optimize patient access. Leading the proactive identification of coverage, coding and payment issues in the field and driving them to resolution is a key objective for this role.

This role partners closely with the Payor Account Director team and supplies the provider-side and field intelligence that informs their work. This role should also coordinate with the Patient Services team. Internally, seamless collaboration with other field-team leaders to ensure a highly coordinated and efficient collaboration in the field is paramount.

Key result areas (major duties, accountabilities and responsibilities)

Field reimbursement leadership

  • Design, develop and implement Go to Market plans for field-based reimbursement managers that will drive superior business results.
  • Coach, develop and retain a high-performing field reimbursement team; own hiring, onboarding, territory and account alignment, capacity planning and succession.
  • Set field performance goals and key performance indicators, conduct regular account reviews, and hold the team accountable to activity, quality and outcome measures.
  • Own the field reimbursement playbook end to end: engagement cadence, escalation pathways, service-level expectations and issue escalation standards.
  • Direct Field Reimbursement Manager education for treatment centers on product coverage across payer types, prior authorization requirements, appropriate claim submission, handling of appeals and general financial and logistical treatment center preparation.
  • In partnership with Training team ensure delivery of the training curriculum and certification standards and keep field-ready materials current as coding and payment changes
  • Establish a structured field insights loop so that coverage, coding and payment issues observed in the field are captured, trended and fed to the payer account team, Market Access leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Ensure strong collaboration across Account Management, Patient Support Services and Medical field teams, including rules of engagement and coordinated account planning.

Coding and payment expertise

  • Serve as the company's subject-matter expert on coding for the therapy and the surgical administration procedure across HCPCS, CPT (Category I and III), ICD-10-CM/PCS, and other relevant codes.
  • Monitor, track and interpret coding developments (new, revised and deleted codes, CPT and HCPCS updates, coding guidance from CMS and specialty societies) and translate them into field guidance and customer-facing materials.
  • Develop and maintain the coding and billing guidance suite (coding and billing guides, claims submission guidance and appeals resources) in partnership with legal, regulatory and compliance.
  • Track and interpret federal and state legislative, regulatory and CMS rulemaking activity (IPPS, OPPS/ASC, Physician Fee Schedule, NTAP, TPT and outpatient pass-through, Medicaid Drug Rebate Program, 340B, IRA implementation) and translate implications into uniQure strategy and field guidance.

Hospital, health-system and site-of-care reimbursement

  • Partner with hospital and health-system finance, revenue cycle, chargemaster, pharmacy and value-analysis committee stakeholders to secure formulary and P&T approval, chargemaster set-up, and operational readiness for a one-time, high-cost therapy.
  • Ensure reimbursement readiness for new treatment centers, including site-of-care assessment, payer mix analysis, contracting interface and pre-treatment financial clearance pathways.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree in life sciences, health policy, health economics, finance/accounting or a closely related field; advanced degree (MBA, MPH, MHA, JD) preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience within the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, including 12+ years in field reimbursement, market access or provider reimbursement roles.
  • Proven experience building and leading field reimbursement teams across a national footprint is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor, track and interpret reimbursement policy, coding and payment developments and translate them into practical field guidance.
  • Deep understanding of hospital and health-system economics, including inpatient and outpatient prospective payment, revenue cycle, chargemaster and buy-and-bill/medical benefit dynamics.
  • Required experience in high-cost rare disease, gene or cell therapy experience preferred.
  • Proven track record of recent launch experience in the last 3 years.
  • Experience with surgically or procedurally administered therapeutics strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional relationship management skills with proven ability to influence top financial and business decision makers at treatment centers.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks for promotion and specifically field reimbursement operating norms.
  • Business maturity with exceptional analytical skills and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Ability to travel ~50% of the time.

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant, relevant years of experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from where they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

US Salary Range$246,000—$318,000 USD
