A Snapshot of Your Day

The proposed master thesis will investigate the design and construction of a modular induction-heating test rig for controlled thermomechanical testing of burners, combustor components, and other hot-path small components. The work combines experimental rig development with coupled electromagnetic, thermal and structural simulations to assess whether selected service-relevant temperature fields, thermal gradients, heating rates and induced stresses can be reproduced. The project offers hands-on experience in test-rig design, instrumentation, numerical simulation and validation, with support from experienced combustion and simulation engineers at Siemens Energy.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Identify representative burner or combustor components, relevant load cases and measurable target quantities for laboratory testing.

Develop a modular test-rig concept including the induction-heating system, interchangeable water-cooled coils, cooling circuit, non-magnetic fixtures, instrumentation, guarding and safety interlocks.

Prepare a bill of materials, supplier-based cost estimate and make-or-buy assessment for a laboratory-scale system.

Develop coupled electromagnetic, transient thermal and structural simulations to dimension the rig and predict temperatures, deformation, stress and strain.

If time and available equipment permit, construct and commission a demonstrator and correlate measurements with numerical predictions.

What You Bring

Currently enrolled in a master’s program in mechanical engineering, applied physics, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.

Strong interest in experimental mechanics, heat transfer, electromagnetics, test-rig development or numerical simulation.

Practical ability and motivation to work with laboratory equipment, instrumentation, mechanical design and safety requirements.

Experience with CAD and finite element analysis is advantageous.

Good problem-solving, analytical and communication skills, together with creativity and the ability to work independently.

About the Team

In our team (Computer Aided Engineering of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor MI department, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.

We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
